list details by family name. This includes the family obligation to the lord of the manor in
return for his permission to live on and farm a parcel of his land. Although Poland
formally abolished this archaic medieval system of serfdom in the 1850’s, actual relief
came to Kożuchów only 50 years later. Many families were able to purchase the land
that their family’s lived and slaved on for centuries because of financial gifts sent back
from family members who emigrated to America.
